Sneak Peek

Guide

What is mystery shopping?

Mystery shopping is when a real person experiences a business as a normal customer — in person, by phone, or online — and reports back on what actually happened. Businesses use it to see their service through their customers' eyes.

How does it work?

  1. Step 1

The business says what to check

For example: Were we greeted at the door? Was the menu price the same as advertised? How long did it take to get an answer?

  2. Step 2

A mystery shopper goes in as a normal customer

Staff don't know they're being evaluated, so the experience is genuine — the same one any customer would get.

  3. Step 3

The business gets a clear, scored report

Findings on service, pricing accuracy, and the overall experience — so the business knows exactly what to fix and what to celebrate.

What can be checked?

  • In person

Visits to shops, restaurants, salons, clinics, and other locations.

  • By phone

Calls to test how enquiries, bookings, and complaints are handled.

  • Online

Browsing a website or app, placing an order, or contacting support.

Why do businesses use it?

Owners and managers can't be everywhere at once. Mystery shopping answers the questions that are otherwise impossible to answer honestly: How are customers treated when nobody senior is watching? Are prices and promotions applied correctly? Is the phone answered helpfully?

It's used across restaurants and cafés, retail, clinics and healthcare, salons and beauty, hotels, and real estate — anywhere customer experience matters.
